Rickey Henderson in HOF [Jan. 12th, 2009|02:33 pm]

Rickey Henderson was just elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame! He was my favorite player growing up, and somewhere in my parents house is a box with something like 250 different Rickey Henderson baseball cards as well as stacks and stacks of various memorabilia (Oakland Tribune from the day he broke the career stolen base record!). I'm not nearly the baseball fan I use to be, but this is still pretty exciting. The induction ceremony is July 26th this summer, and since I've never been to Cooperstown, I think I'll probably make the trip.

How difficult/expensive is it to get tickets to the induction ceremony?

I have no idea. I'm gonna look into it. I'm pretty sure it's not that bad.

Cooperstown is a such a fun weekend trip! Make sure you stop at the Ommegang brewery while you're there.

I loved henderson too. Him, Eckersley, and Canseco made oakland my second favorite team in the late 80s.

I discovered recently that Henderson is known for being a little off and not too bright.

Ya, he's definitely a little odd. He refers to himself in the third person a lot, and comes off as kind of crazy.

It's unclear how bright he is. Obviously he's not a rocket scientist, but former teammates give him tons of praise about "knowledge of the game". He would study tapes of pitchers for hours and hours to learn how to tell when they were throwing over to first, and when they were throwing home. That sort of thing requires at least some sort of mental acuity.
