| notes on dodgeball.com |
[Jan. 15th, 2009|01:15 pm] |
Ya, so I found out from the same blog post as the rest of you. I would have thought that someone would have told me internally first, but I guess not. In fact, I was denying the whole thing at Lock's birthday party last night because it didn't make any sense. I guess I was wrong. It's been fun keeping the lights on these past couple years for you guys, and I'm disappointed that my corporate masters have decided it's no longer worth the bother. Oh well.
Anyways, I don't know yet what "We will communicate the exact time-frame shortly" means yet, but when we figure that out I'll put a note of some kind up on the dodgeball homepage. In addition, for those of you that care about this sort of thing, I'm going to do some work to make it easy to export your checkin history in a convenient format (above and beyond the iCal that is already available). If you have any particular formats you might want it in, feel free to leave a comment here and I'll see what I can do. Chances are it'll be a gdata feed of some kind.
Don't fret too much about not having a tool like this to use when dodgeball gets turned off. Like you, I'm pretty unimpressed with most of the other current offerings, but I know of a couple soon-to-be-released things in the works. Keep an eye out, and we'll all find a new home that suits our needs just fine. |

| Huzzah, it is done! |
[Jul. 22nd, 2008|10:42 am] |
Check it out. We're still checking in some docs to the SVN repository, and there are undoubtedly little things to fix here and there, but GXP is now Open Sourced. There will be a blog post here tomorrow, and we're giving a talk as OSCON as well. |

| OSCON '08 |
[Apr. 3rd, 2008|11:46 am] |
Hey, check it out! I'm speaking at the O'reilly Open Source Conference in July on some stuff I'll be open sourcing from within Google.
GXP is a templating system used to output XML/SGML markup (most often HTML). Used internally at google for many years, we are now open sourcing this tool for community use and development. GXP has the following core features...
It'll be cool (if you're a big nerd). You should come! |

| work desktop |
[Dec. 18th, 2006|05:19 pm] |
I'm not there yet, but I'm getting closer to the dream:

2 Linux boxes, 3 24" widescreens (in portrait mode), + synergy so I can slide the mouse across all three screens. |

| java puzzler of the day |
[Dec. 5th, 2006|09:18 pm] |
You have a function:
public static <T> Iterator<Iterator<T>> partition(final Iterator<T> iterator, final int partitionSize);
It takes the intial iterator and partitions it into partitionSize chunks returning an Iterator or Iterators. Pretty good so far.
But really I want to partition an Iterable<T> into Iterable<Iterable<T>>. Figure out how to do this given the other function. It's a lot harder than you would think. |

| Lidell + Tech Talk |
[Apr. 26th, 2006|02:04 pm] |
Went to Bowery last night to see Mr. Lidell do his neo-soul thing. Anyone who was anywhere else in the city seriously missed out (*cough* nyclife *cough*). That man has more charisma on stage than anyone I've ever seen. While I did not witness this myself, there were apparently actual panties thrown onstate at some point durring the performance.
Gave a tech-talk @ work today on the dodgeball.com port + tips 'n tricks about various internal tools. A surprisingly large number of people were there. Enough to make me a bit nervous even. It went OKish. I'm not sure how much people got out of it really, but at least some I hope. Talking about the fine points of code in front of a big group isn't easy. |

| daylight savings |
[Apr. 3rd, 2006|09:40 pm] |
I just spent the past two hours debugging a problme that came down to this:
private static final long ONE_DAY = 1000L * 60 * 60 * 24;
and the fact that ONE_DAY is sometimes not 24 hours.
I hate you daylight savings time. |

No, no, no, that's crazy, you're out of your mind, he's absolutely out of his mind...
We're talking, my dear, about a calculated risk, which is the only option left to us...So shutting down the system...
I will not do it. You'll have to get somebody else, because I will not.
If I understand correctly, the system will come back on their original start-up modes correct?
Theoretically, yeah, but we've never shut down the whole system. It may not come back at all.
Will you please shut down the system.
OK, but... you asked for it. Hold on to your butts! |

| Joblog |
[Feb. 28th, 2006|08:24 pm] |
I hate my job. No wait...I love it. No wait...I hate it.
Let's just say it's intense right now. I really really need to start taking some tylenol, but I hate pills so I'm resisting.
Worked 'till 1am last night. Working late again tonight. Need more hours in the day. Really need to not be going to Florida this weekend, but there is nothing I can really do about it. |

There's a big crowd of people outside my building protesting the Google/China thing.
It's bizzare. |

Dodgeball now has tags. There are some bugs, and there's obviously a lot more we can do with it, but the infrastructure is in place. |

| Pittsburgh next week |
[Oct. 7th, 2005|01:54 pm] |
To whom it may concern:
I will be in Pittsburgh next week from Wednesday to Saturday for Google recruiting @ CMU. For those who weren't around so long ago, the last time I was in town on a recruiting event, I/Microsoft financed Rudy's 21st birthdady party.
Prepare accordingly. |
