| Ross Douthat on the state of American Conservatism |
[Nov. 3rd, 2008|06:20 pm] |
I have a half written blog post that I may or may not post tomorrow on my feelings about the current state of American politics. If I decide not to post it this blog post from Ross Douthat comes as close to my feelings as anything I've yet read. |

| Obama on Wall Street |
[Sep. 15th, 2008|11:37 pm] |
Keep in mind that every time the Obama campaign says something like this, they are basically saying that the Bush administration should have done something (thought it's not at all clear what exactly) about the fact that our financial institutions were loaning so much money to poor people so that they could purchase homes.
He can pander with the best of them. |

| Thoughts on FISA |
[Jul. 10th, 2008|11:43 am] |
So, as most of you are aware, the US Senate passed a bill yesterday that, among other things, gives the Telcos immunity against privacy lawsuits they are facing after they (possibly illegally) assisted the US gov't in various wiretapping schemes over the last couple of years. In particular, the liberal blogosphere is up in arms as the fact that Obama voted for the bill.
Really though, I'm not really clear on why some much of the outrage has been focused on the immunity provisions in the bill. Sure, complain all you want about the erosion of civil liberties in our post 9/11 world. I'm right there with you. But when the US gov't goes and tells the telcos to do something, and the US gov't has the ability to significantly harm the business of the companies should we really be getting mad at the telcos when they caved?
Maybe there's something I'm missing here, but shouldn't we be trying to change things by changing the gov't and not by being so focused on the right to sue the Telcos who were just doing what they were told? |

| Ross Perot on the US Budget |
[Jun. 18th, 2008|03:02 pm] |
Ross Perot (I know! Crazy!) has a pretty good presentation on the budget difficulties that the US is likely to face over the next 75 years or so. Have a look, and celebrate our impending doom at the hands of old timers medical bills. |

| that presedintial election meme |
[Jan. 7th, 2008|05:18 pm] |
Just to kill the monotony of everyone on my friends list (save jette) having that "Blue on top, Red on bottom" thing going on....
60% John McCain 59% Rudy Giuliani 57% Chris Dodd 55% Dennis Kucinich 55% Mitt Romney 53% Ron Paul 53% Mike Gravel 51% Mike Huckabee 51% Barack Obama 50% Hillary Clinton 50% Bill Richardson 50% Joe Biden 46% John Edwards 44% Fred Thompson 36% Tom Tancredo
2008 Presidential Candidate Matching Quiz
A few of the questions I thought all of the answers were stupid though. Especially the one about pollution. |

| Obama Video |
[Jan. 17th, 2007|02:44 pm] |
It might just be me, but after watching Obama's pre-announcement video I got kind of annoyed. He has this bit (and not just in the video, but as a wider theme) where he says that it's not so much the issues that matter but he wants "A new kind of politics" where people all just get along or whatever. That's all well and good, but has it really gotten so bad that we're celebrating a politician who really just doesn't want to talk about the issues? People complain all the time about how the media refuses the cover issues and treats elections like sporting events (up 5 points in the polls with 2 weeks to go!). Now we've got politicians doing pretty much the exact same thing, and we're celebrating it!
The exact same thing applies to McCain. Really the similarities between these two are uncanny. They both hold some of the more exteme positions in their respective parties, but because of various points of style they are seen as moderates with crossover appeal. |
