| Dismemberment Plan @ The Black Cat |
[Apr. 29th, 2007|02:04 pm] |
Took the train the DC on Friday to hang with queiss and try to get into the Black Cat for the Dismemberment Plan. Showed up suuuuper early, and actually got in without too much trouble at all. Made friends with some locals + two guys that had flown in from London. We situated ourselves right at the very front and stood there through two (actually damn good) opening bands. The plan's set was awesome. They must place played over 20 songs for well over an hour and a half. Played all my favorites (Back & Forth, The Invitation, Spider in the Snow, Ice of Boston (dancing on stage!)). The most pit was getting a little crazy at times, but most everyone was cool about it and just dancing and having a good time. I think close to half the crowd had come in from out of town.
Oh ya, spotted Ben Gibbard. My note on Seattle Notables should go up soon! My second Seattle Notable sighting. Pretty good considering I live 3000 miles away. |

| Arcade Fire Show |
[Feb. 14th, 2007|01:54 pm] |
Saw Arcade Fire last night. It was good, but not mind blowing. Accoustincs in the church were not the best, and their set really wasn't very long (75 minutes with the 2 song encore).
One note: they sold about 50 tickets at the door, so if you want to see them, you might try stopping by and giving it a shot. |

| Madonna |
[Jun. 29th, 2006|12:15 pm] |
Saw Madonna at MSG last night. My first real stadium show. Reconfiguring stage, and trapdoors, and roller skating dancers, and spectacle, spectacle, spectacle! It was pretty awesome actually! When we first got there I was sitting three seats away from Rosie O'Donnell, but she eventually left to go sit in her special seat practically on the catwalk. Pretty wild. |

| goldfrapp take 2 |
[May. 16th, 2006|10:54 am] |
Goldfrapp @ Irving Plaza last night. Soooooo much better than the Nokia Theatre show. It was actually LOUD, and the crowd was way into it, and the light show was fantastic, and Alison was way way into it (and looked fantastic in a black jumpsuit + sparkly makeup). It was more or less the same set as before which meant they didn't play Twist again but otherwise it was as super awesome as I possibly could have hoped for. Definitely one of the better shows I've been to so far this year. |

Of course the biggers concern is that temperatures are likely to be > 100 on the field. Yikes! |

| Lidell + Tech Talk |
[Apr. 26th, 2006|02:04 pm] |
Went to Bowery last night to see Mr. Lidell do his neo-soul thing. Anyone who was anywhere else in the city seriously missed out (*cough* nyclife *cough*). That man has more charisma on stage than anyone I've ever seen. While I did not witness this myself, there were apparently actual panties thrown onstate at some point durring the performance.
Gave a tech-talk @ work today on the dodgeball.com port + tips 'n tricks about various internal tools. A surprisingly large number of people were there. Enough to make me a bit nervous even. It went OKish. I'm not sure how much people got out of it really, but at least some I hope. Talking about the fine points of code in front of a big group isn't easy. |

| the new black |
[Apr. 20th, 2006|01:18 pm] |
Went to The Knit last night to see The New Black who cam highly recommended, and were described as someone Pretty Girls Make Gravesesque, but it was bad, really bad. Too much 70s guitar wankery and cheese, not enough dancey beats. But now I'm looking at their webpage, and listening to their music on MySpace, and I'm just terribly confused. This is ot the same band I saw last night. Different band, same name? Must be. Hella annoying. |

| Tapes 'n Tapes |
[Jan. 10th, 2006|12:54 pm] |
Saw Tapes 'N Tapes (the latest blogger hype band) @ the Merc last night. There were moments of awesome, but nothing particularly special. Finian McKean (ex Push-Kings) was on before them...he sucked. |

| Goldfrapp Review |
[Dec. 6th, 2005|11:54 am] |
It was good, above average, perhaps even touching on great, but as possibly the show I've looked forward to more than any other this year it kinda let me down. Part of this might be my fault as I came straight from a crazy busy work day, missed the first song and a half and took another two songs to really get in the right mindset. Also, I had zero to drink.
The Nokia Theatre is beautiful. It's annoying as hell that it's in Times Square, but it was the perfect venue for her. The stage set up was great with Alison rocking a sexy black jumpsuit and her musicians dressed as Jesus, a Burninmanesque freak, and other assorted characters. There were dancers in fetish outfits in about a third of the songs. The songs, needless to say, were fantastic (though I still like Black Cherry better than Supernature).
But here's the thing, it wasn't NEARLY loud enough. K2 and I could easily talk to each other without really even raising our voices. And, at least partially due to this fact, the crowd was not really dancing much. A show like that should be OVERWHELMING. About the only time it even approached the level that I wanted was during Ooh La La which was the last song of the set. It should have been loud, and intense, and a rolling sensory overload. I wish it has been on a Friday night so I could have gotten dressed up in glitter and danced in the middle of a throbbing crowd while my head exploded from the lights and music. That's what I wanted from Goldfrapp. And she should have played Twist.
It was a good show though. |

| I'll go back if you ask me |
[Jun. 16th, 2005|10:46 am] |
I dunno if the various reviews of Tuesday's show were just wrong, or if Wednesday was just dramatically better, but Bloc Party was fantastic last night. Arrived early enough to see the extremely underwhelming Automato, but things were great after that. Sure it was hot enough that I was sweating, but that's also because I was jumping up and down and dancing with the very active and fun crowd (well, at least the third close to the stage was, dunno what was going on towards the back). And ya, the crowd was young (16+ door policy), but you gotta appreciate the kids that wanted to see this band. I like the renovations they've made to Webster Hall as well, they've moved the bars around and opened up things a lot on the right. Now if only they'd stock Sapphire behind the bar. Anyways, we were treated to most of Silent Alarm plus a couple of older songs that I didn't know and a new one or three. Wandered back to the merch table to pick up a t-shirt after the encore only to be treated to a (slightly strange considering people weren't cheering much, and the house lights had come on) 2nd encore featuring a little Kele drum solo and a couple of stage dives by the band. Too fun.
Kele, at least, called it the best show they've done in New York, and at least from what I've seen (I wasn't cool enough to see them at the knit), I have to agree. They'll be back in September for those that haven't yet caught them live. I recommend getting tix to the 2nd night. |
